We do approve any vet recommended control such as vet prescribed chews and pills. I always caution anyone using the tropicals that they can cause irritation and itching. Also if you have anyone in the family with sensitive skin this may be a issue when loving on your dog and all of those chemicals can then come into contact with their skin.
If you are a traveler or even someone that just takes a occasional drive please start exposing your puppy to riding while they are young. This will help ease their anxiety, it will given them a sense of familiarity, and best if all it aids in the puppy not deleting motion sickness. Being in a car with a sick dog or puppy is no fun for either of you. The first time or 2 expect some nervousness and car sickness but that will get better with each ride. Do not wait until the dog is older and then attempt. All dogs or puppies should be in a safe carseat type booster or secured by the collar or harness with a seat belt attachment. A unsecured dog is a distraction and is unsafe and can cause anxiety for everyone. Make sure to have extra paper towels or a towel in case its needed.
The short answer is yes. Praising good behavior is better than focusing on the negative. The first 48 hours are hard but sticking to a routine and letting the puppy get use to new boundaries and their new environment is key. Start off with introducing the crate with enjoyable times. This can be offering a favorite chew toy to even placing their food in the crate. Then close the door and walk away. If they start whining a simple " ssshhhh" and walk away. The more times you come then they will associate to getting you to come which is the opposite of the goal. Be consistent but never use the crate as punishment. This will cause fear, anxiety, and bad trust. This will also teach the dog that the crate is a negative experience. I always advocate that a dog have a crate or kennel. This gives them a decompress zone where they can go thats all theirs. They soon learn to respect that space and are eager to go in and rest. It also provides a safe space should you need to run errands or simply can't supervise them. Avoid putting toys in the crate other than the snuggle puppy.
Once we arrange a pickup date and time you should contact a local vet and let them know you are getting a new puppy and that you need to schedule a puppy wellness exam. I provide all the documents that you will need on pickup day to take to your vet once you have an appointment. Please remember in order for the health guarantee to be effective the puppy must be seen within 72 hours of purchase and a screen shot must be sent of the receipt. This is in the health contract that is signed.
As for grooming I always recommend doing your own. This is a great time to bond with your pet and build trust with them. If you can't I totally understand as well. I will encourage you to go ahead and make a appointment for when the dogs is 12 weeks old. This appointment is normally for a trim of the feet, face, and fanny. This is not a complete groom where they use clippers. Also make sure you work with your groomer and go ahead and get scheduled for grooms every 6-8 weeks. Please start the grooming process while they are young so that it becomes routine. The longer you wait the harder it makes it for you both. Groomers are seeing a great increase in clients so once you make you puppy a vet appointment also go ahead and schedule the puppy groom as well that way you have an appointment. Locally where I am located ,which is NC, groomers are scheduled out at least 6-8 weeks and even longer.
Puppies will be puppies and dogs will be dogs.
Normally a bath every 30 days or 1 a month is enough to keep those pesky scents at bay. If they have mud or dirt you can simply rinse their feet under running water and towel dry or use the mud buster listed under the new puppy shopping list page. I always recommend to blow dry with a pet dryer. This reduces smells and makes sure the hair is dry from root to tip.
Brushing their hair doesn't have to be a hard time. I advise to brush everyday but at least every other day. First you will use the stainless steel comb to brush from tail to head then reverse and do head to tail. This makes sure you are combing the undercoat so that there are no mats.
Dogs can get heat strokes and have heat related problems if the weather is too hot. On hot days please follow this chart. Also have fresh water available and shade.
Please don't ever leave a dog unintended. Whether in a car or in your backyard they should have supervision. A car can get too hot too quick.
