Which is better male or female? Is one of my most frequently asked questions. I wanted to give some pros and cons and more information to help.
Everyone at some point or another has heard a female dog will make a better pet. Alot of people want that “special little girl”. For whatever reason they don’t think that females will exhibit “alpha” behaviors such as marking . A lot of people think that females are more friendly and that they don’t take part in fighting which is NOT true. In dog packs the females determine the pecking order and decides what goes on. This behavior causes females to become stubborn, independent, and territorial than the males. Most fighting will usually happen with 2 females rather than 2 males or a male and a female.
Males are more affectionate, attentive, and praise driven. They are more sociable, they tend to be accepting of other pets, and take faster to kids. Males are easily motivated by treats, and are so eager to please that training is easier. Their more playful personalities make them more likely to act puppyish no matter how old they are.
Neutered males rarely have behaviors such as humping and marking. Once the testosterone levels diminish after neutering it will cause any negative behaviors to vanish if there even were any.
With all of this information I hope this has helped when you are trying to choose between a male or female. As long as you set boundaries and keep routines and provide training any dog can be a great pet. I always try to pair the right puppy with the right family. Sometimes this may mean looking at the puppies behavior and personality rather than male or female and color. Of course I know everyone has their preferences and we do our best to match that. Sometimes however if you have preferences it may mean waiting until another litter is born.
